Unsolicited thoughts on the latest rendition of Greek myth, film literally at six

mood: hopefulhopeful

I got my brother this book for Christmas, which it turned out was a lucky bit of timing. Then the other day I cringed away from an unexpected spoiler on TV, and we decided I’d better read the blasted book before the marketing spoilered everything.

Since I’m going to see the film later, here are some lengthy preliminary thoughts on Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief.

Spoilers for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (nothing from the movie that wasn't on TV) and also Assassin's Creed 2Collapse )

Three things I’ve learned recently:

- Birthday cakes are surprisingly easy to make at home.

- For all the wonders of modern civilisation, we still don’t have wireless broadband that can maintain a reliable signal ten feet from the source.

- I really like vaccinations. They make me feel all macho hyper. No, I don’t know why.

And unsurprisingly, it's about Yeerk OCs, and also art. Call it a test run.

Title: Postcard Perfect
Summary: Motivation comes in roundabout ways, even for Yeerks.

Just two Controllers, talking politics and hobbies...Collapse )

For The Love Of Little Green Slugs...

Seems like no sooner have I finished writing one biggish fic than the next one pops up. Actually, this one’s been coming on for a long while, but it’s only starting to show wordcount now.

The world-building for this fic will never, ever end...Collapse )

Tomorrow, I talk about buzzards, for we have some.

Curious thing about research into online psychology – the writers go on at length about how people are anonymous online and the myriad effects of this – deindividuation, more self-disclosure – and can then go straight on to note that, for example, people can form attachments to others’ online personas and reconstruct their own identities.

I think ‘the Internet is anonymous’ is something that’s just taken for granted now, which is obviously true in some parts, not so much in places where posters/commenters/internet peeps have fixed handles, user profiles, icons, signatures and established presences in the group. If fandom_wank has taught us anything it’s that people often aren’t as anonymous as they think they are. So just how well does ‘long-distance’ equate to ‘anonymous? Does the fact that an identity isn’t your ‘primary’, ‘real life’ or ‘face-to-face’ one make it less significant?

Needless to say, I’ve approached this problem the only reasonable way and ordered a book about it.

Related: McKenna and Bargh have an interesting review of research in the area which tries to sift out the established facts.

Cliffjumper fic again, 'cause I can.

I'm actually pretty pleased with how this one came out - even if it's the one that comes after that I'm looking forward to.

Title: Sidelined
Summary: Cheetor fails to excuse himself. Cliffjumper has the dubious honour of listening in.

This is probably the last time he'll try to use this tactic...Collapse )

Spoileriffic Thoughts on Revenge of the Fallen (Part Two)

I did say there were some things I liked about the film. And since I wrote this down well before my memory of the film faded, it's as accurate as it's going to get without a second viewing. (And frankly I'd much prefer to see District 9 again - not sarcastic, I'd just rather put the money thataway).

As promised, the (more) positive halfCollapse )

Sad RL update, because I think I ought to say something about it, somewhere.

Cut for I-feel-awkward-writing-this...Collapse )
Looking back I’m not even sure why I made this post, which may say something about how skewed my viewpoint is. Or not.

And I have another half-rant to go here before I forget it. Back to silly-exaggerated-annoyance tomorrow.
